Why I Don’t Plan to Retire

Oct 24, 2019

I don’t plan to retire, ever. Do we have a 401K? Yes. Are we contributing to it? Absolutely. Do we prepare for the worst and have an emergency fund? Always. Still, I don’t really have any intention of ever retiring.

Why? I love what I do already. If I were to retire tomorrow or at 65, the activities that would consume my free time would be what I am already doing today.

The FIRE (financially independent, retire early) is taking hold today and I am intrigued. Perhaps because I have already done a form of this. I left my full-time job to freelance, to follow my passion and be home with my kids more. In a way, I have retired already—albeit not in the traditional sense. I still have clients. I still have deadlines. And I still have an income.

Yes, the topics I write about will likely evolve in the next three decades. My income at 72 will likely be drastically different than my income at 32. But I don’t plan to retire. I plan to do what I love for the rest of my life.
